OKLAHOMA CITY –
Oklahoma state troopers will have an opportunity to train on their own firing range sooner rather than later, after Governor Henry signed into law House Bill 2215 authored by Oklahoma State Representative Jason Murphey.
Murphey who serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee passed the bill that will give Commissioner of Public Safety Kevin Ward the ability to directly supervise the construction of the firing range on land donated for that purpose. The funding used to build the range will not come from appropriated money, but will be built using drug forfeiture funds.
Murphey explained that a key feature will be a driving firing range. Murphey said that he expects the driving firing range will be made available to all law enforcement agencies so they can receive training in shooting instances involving vehicle chases.
"The ability of our police officials to have access to the proper training for these types of stressful situations is very important. I am especially pleased that the facility will be built on donated land and no appropriated tax dollars will be used in its construction," Murphey said.
