Jason's Philosophy On Government - It's About The People
Jason W. Murphey
As an elected official I have had the opportunity to see how the government works from the inside out. I have made the following observation.
There are many political leaders who are elected to their respective positions with the best of intentions. However, once assuming their positions of power they stop seeing themselves as representatives of the average person but instead believe they are the elite of society. They tend to believe that their government entity is what makes their city, county, state or country great. They will do most anything to insure that their government is successful regardless of the impact this has on the people. Whether through the creation of new laws or unnecessary taxation they will stop at little to make sure their government grows larger and larger with each passing year.
I believe that a society's greatest is not defined by the size and scope of its government but by its people. A smaller, less restrictive government provides the freedom to the people to act in a productive manner. When government shrinks, liberty grows. When the people take advantage of this liberty and act in accordance with the Judo-Christian values that constitute our rule-of-law then that society will be successful. However when burdened with immense taxation and regulation the people loose their freedom and incentive to be productive and thus their society becomes a failure.
This simple concept is alien to many of our elected officials today. They sacrifice the well being of the people for the benefit of their government entity on a frequent basis. This is wrong. As elected officials we must always understand that our foremost responsibility is to represent the people and one of the greatness needs of the people is liberty. In today's world of ever increasing taxation and regulation it is imperative that the scope of the government at all levels is reduced in order to allow the people the right to exercise their God-given liberty as mentioned in the Declaration of Independence.
As a society we deserve what we demand. If we demand that our elected officials follow this concept then we will receive a free society in which we are allowed to prosper. Thus it is our responsibility to elect honest men and women of integrity at all levels of government who will dedicate themselves to the reduction of the scope of that government.
